does the lack of a legend affect your opinion on the aesthetic quality of this display?

It shouldn't...should it? If you view the display independently from all associations, it shouldn't change your opinion on its aesthetic quality.

On the other hand, if you understood the informative value of the display, maybe that would change your aesthetic experience (and therefore your opinion on aesthetic quality).
