a set of textual additions to the page numbers on the top of every page of the South African newspaper Cape Argus, to commemorate World AIDS day on December 1st. these subtle factual additions aimed to educate the public on statistics relating to the AIDS pandemic in South Africa. all the statistics were collected from UNICEF & the South African Department of Health.

A less noble cause, but this technique was used by BMW to advertise their 1-series coupe in March 24th issue of Autoweek. Each page number corresponded to some feature of the car (e.g. "6: Number of gears in the all-new BMW 1 Series")

I don't know who is the father of this design, but Wired Magazine has done (Still does?) this for a very long time.
