Subsidyscope, an initiative of The Pew Charitable Trusts, is pulling together data on the financial institutions that are receiving benefits from the various US federal programs in order to understand how and where taxpayer dollars are being spent. In its focus on raising the public awareness about the role of federal subsidies in the economy, this initiative seems to fit neatly with the current push towards government transparency, and the recent launch of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), a recent initiative meant to strengthen the US financial sector by purchasing assets and equity from financial institutions. Interesting data visualizations include the interactive bar and bubble charts detailing recent TARP transactions, a US map detailing its geographic impact and a stacked bar graph revealing the potential holdings of the Federal Reserve (exceeding $5 trillion), among many others.
