Backbars [elzr.com] is a freely downloadable GreaseMonkey script for your browser that turns the headlines and comments of social link-sites into unobtrusive bar charts. For instance, Backbars is able to visually illustrate the votes, diggs, views or users on online services like Reddit, Delicious, Digg, Hacker News, Stack Overflow and MetaFilter on their respective webpages.

The idea is to provide users subtle visual clues to improve the perception of quantitative data. The backbars actually do not replace the count they represent, but convey the magnitude unobtrusively in relation to the other values within the same table or list. As a result, users can for instance observe whether a specific Digg story is twice as popular as others, or understand the distribution of keyword frequencies within a specific Delicious profile.
