information aesthetics

a set of "semi-abstract" circular visualizations of the WiFi encryption levels while traveling through the cities of London, Vescemont, Belfort & Barcelona. each circular item represent the recording of wireless network through a journey. each succesfull recording influences the time line thickness & adds a “pin”. red pins represent non-encrypted networks other networks are the smaller black ones. the thickness of the main line & the length of the "node pins" depends on the ecryption from thinner to thicker: "WEP" , "WPA", "TKIP" & "NONE".

a navigable Earth globe that represents the strength of relations between cities from searches on Google. the concept is based on measuring the "Google proximity": the comparison of number of pages on the Internet where 2 particular cities appear close to each other with the number of pages they appear isolated. therefore, 2 cities can be very close despite they are far apart physically.

a physical data sculpture representing the movement & communication made with a cell phone in the timespan of 1 week. the aim of the project is to draw attention to the German telecommunications data retention act & the breach of privacy it constitutes. the law requires the telecommunications providers to store the connection data of all customers for 6 months & to make it available to law enforcement agencies upon request. the density of the cell sites reflects the speed & frequency of a person's movement within the city. the more often a place is visited, the more cell sites were added to the map.

an online map that visualizes news reports of the election-related human rights violations in Zimbabwe, based on data from the Zimbabwe Election Watch (ZEW) project, which set out to monitor the Zimbabwean government's compliance with the SADC Principles & Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections.

the map illustrates recent events in the context of voter registration, abduction, murder, political cleansing, unlawful detention, buying votes, political violence, restrictions of freedom of information & many other issues.
