As a natural continuation of the previous post on the Paper-Based Pie Chart, infosthetics is hosting its first competition. One that everyone should be able to enter, regardless of programming experience or data visualization expertise.
Deadline: Tuesday 10 February, 12pm. First prize: the book , about the design of hand-made, mostly paper, objects (and an ideal Valentine's gift for a design-addicted friend). Jury: infosthetics and (creator of the paper-based pie chart). Criteria: beauty and originality versus readability and usability. The winner and all top entries will be posted next week.
To participate:
- Build a paper-based data visualization (made with paper), in any shape, form or scale. Real data is preferred.
- Email your entry to paper at infosthetics.com.
- Attach 1 image, JPG, 600x600px.
- Include 50-100 words describing your entry. A link to a webpage with more information is allowed.
Wanted: sponsors for future competitions!

12pm what time zone?
12pm your time. I am guessing most participants might live in Hawaii, for instance :)
Holy cow! I love this idea!
Holy cow! That is a really tight deadline! It might take me that long to come up with the concept, let alone build it.
Also, "beauty and originality 'versus' readability and usability?" Does that mean "more than" or "preferred to" or something like that?
It means we aim for the subtle but important equilibrium between the two areas. Or, in other words, a project that uses beauty to increase the usability, and vice versa. However, exceptions exist that just aim for one of the extremes, and are just perfect in that way.
Is it possible to submit more than one chart?
Sure you can. Send each entry in a separate email, though.
Eagerly awaiting those entries...
Are you sure that the email address is working properly ? I've sent my entry yesterday...
:( Our crew was going to work on our entry today, but I forgot the paper at home!!! :(
Can wait to see the other entrants though... looking forward to it.
