visual jazz improvisation
7 October 2005
a novel data visualization technique for representing music that shows the 'signature patterns' of a jazz musician’s improvisational style. the visualization conveys 'melodic landscapes' (the general contours of musical phrasing) & 'harmonic palettes' (a musician's tendency to use a particular combination of notes in a given part of the song). the visualizations illustrate the contrasting melodic & harmonic styles of three musicians, & uncovered some surprises, such as how Miles Davis played musical ideas that contradicted his own composition. in addition, these data visualizations can also serve as a real-time improvisational aid, allowing music students to borrow the harmonic vocabulary of jazz masters.
