news-controlled rice cooker

18 January 2007

ericecooker.jpg
a rice cooker that tracks Internet news about genetically modified rice. for each new report about GM rice, a quarter cup of rice is dispensed into the cooker. when the cooker has enough rice for a meal, water is added automatically, the cooker is switched on & an email is sent out to inviting people to eat the rice.

the project is designed to create awareness to issues surrounding genetically modified organisms by producing excessive amounts of cooked rice & attempting to feed people with it.

"... create awareness [of] genetically modified organisms by producing excessive amounts ... & attempting to feed people with it ..."

So ... they want people aware of issues with GM food, and they want to punctuate the point by making too much food? This sounds like a good idea gone bad. When is too much food, by itself, a problem? Especially with the hunger & famines we see around the globe.

There are many reasons to be wary of GM food. There are many reasons to be wary of GM science altogether. Which is why this attempt to educate people disappoints me, as it doesn't quite make sense ...

Maybe if the rice being cooked were inedible, or only partially so ... or maybe if it glowed in the dark, or was a funny color. Then there would be a lot of food, and the food would be suspicious.

errrrrr what? interesting but hairbrained....

At best this is laughable; at worst it is an insult to all the people in the world that would love to have "too much rice". Considering that the anti-GM lobby is helping to keep many of them undernourished, this is almost sick.
