Google trigram frequency visualization

9 May 2008

google_trigrams.jpg
a set of relational visualizations represent the relative frequencies of trigrams as they appear on the web, based on a massive (100GB) n-gram dataset from Google's corpus archive. n-grams are pieces of sentences. a trigram (n=3), for example, might be "I like food" or "frog is tasty."

the first visualization compares the 120 trigrams of the terms 'He' with 'She', while the other is based on 75 trigrams of 'I' & 'You'. the frequencies of the 2nd word in the trigrams were sorted in decreasing order. words are sized according to the square root of their use frequencies. the color-coded lines act like paths (similar to a tree structure), enumerating all of the occurring trigrams.

3d_search_engines.jpg
some recently introduced visual search metaphors. searchme uses an interactive interface resembling Mac's Coverflow in iTunes & Finder, RedZee adopts a similar, but more rudimentary visual metaphor of showing screenshot thumbnails that can be navigated in a seemingly fluid way, while brynsbrain prefers a pseudo-3D interface that known from the 3D tilt viewer.

NovoSpark weather visualizer

3 April 2008

novospark.jpg
an alternative weather forecast visualization method that compresses 6 main weather parameters into a single image. every vertical line in the image is the colored representation of a data record with 6 main weather parameters for a particular time of the day (or night). the more similar the color patterns of 2 different vertical lines, the closer are the weather conditions they represent on the image.

users can analyze the image from left to right to spot color patterns occurring during the entire forecast period, which usually point to certain patterns in weather conditions, or even weather anomalies. for instance, almost every location will show 6 (by the number of days the forecast is given for) easily identifiable day/night color transitions as weather conditions at those times of the day significantly differ, especially in northern areas. the dark blue or dark red spots usually point to spikes in certain weather parameters like temperature, wind speed or cloudness, & result in weather anomalies like rain or severe thunderstorms.
